QUANTM Electric Diaphragm Pump Solves a Challenging Groundwater Transfer Application

A leading UK galvanising company was experiencing persistent reliability issues when transferring contaminated groundwater to its filtration system. The challenging application would ultimately require a QUANTM electric diaphragm (EODD) pump, but first they needed to understand why other pumping technologies had repeatedly failed.

The liquid could contain suspended solids and surface pollutants, and operating conditions required pumps to frequently run dry and self-prime. After several conventional pumping technologies failed to provide a dependable solution, the company approached CDR Pumps to identify a more reliable alternative.

Initially, an air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pump appeared to offer a viable solution. Its self-priming capability, ability to run dry, and tolerance for suspended solids made it well-suited to the application. However, the site’s compressed air system did not have sufficient capacity to support another pneumatic pump, making an AODD installation impractical.

The QUANTM Electric Diaphragm Pump Solution

Following a review of the application, CDR Pumps recommended a QUANTM electric-diaphragm (EODD) pump. By combining the proven pumping characteristics of an AODD pump with a highly efficient electric drive, QUANTM eliminated the need for compressed air while still providing the self-priming performance, dry-run capability and solids handling required for reliable operation.

The seal-less design reduced the risk of leakage, while the pump’s ability to run dry without damage improved reliability in this demanding application. It could also stall under pressure without compromising performance. What’s more, the electric drive reduced energy consumption by up to 80% compared with a conventional air-operated diaphragm pump, making it a highly energy-efficient solution.

Following successful installation, the QUANTM pump delivered reliable, trouble-free operation, running at varying speeds to accommodate changing water levels and providing a long-term solution to a persistent operational challenge.
